Travis Barker is back on the road — and Kourtney Kardashian is missing her man.

Almost two weeks after Kardashian, 44, was rushed to the hospital for “emergency fetal surgery” to save her baby’s life, her rockstar husband is back on tour with Blink-182.

“I miss my husband 🥹,” the Lemme founder posted on her Instagram Story alongside an impressive video of Barker, 47, at the drums.

The musician reposted the clip to his own Instagram Story and responded, “I miss you my wife.”

On Sept. 1, Barker rushed home to be by his wife’s side for what the band called an “urgent family matter” in a statement shared to Instagram.

Barker and Kardashian — who wed three times in 2022: once in Las Vegas, once at a courthouse in Santa Barbara and then in a lavish ceremony in Italy — announced in June that they are expecting their first child together. They later revealed that they are expecting a baby boy.

On Sept. 6, Kardashian shared an update on Instagram regarding her baby. She revealed that she had been “rush[ed] into urgent fetal surgery,” and thanked her husband, her mother Kris Jenner and her doctors for their support.

“I will be forever grateful to my incredible doctors for saving our baby’s life. I am eternally grateful to my husband who rushed to my side from tour to be with me in the hospital and take care of me afterwards, my rock. And to my mom, thank you for holding my hand through this,” she wrote on Instagram.

A version of this story appeared in CNN’s What Matters newsletter. To get it in your inbox, sign up for free here.CNN —

It’s hard to believe there’s a new eyewitness account from a Secret Service agent who was right there at the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

This is, after all among the most investigated, revisited and argued about events in US history.

But Paul Landis, who in 1963 was a young agent detailed to protect the first lady, Jacqueline Kennedy, shares recollections in a new memoir, “The Final Witness,” to be published next month. The 60th anniversary of the assassination is in November.

What Landis remembers about being near Kennedy’s body could challenge elements of the so-called magic bullet theory, that one of the bullets that struck Kennedy also wounded then-Texas Gov. John Connally. According to the Warren Commission, the intact bullet was discovered when it was knocked onto the floor next to a stretcher holding Connally.

Appearing in his first television interview on CNN’s “The Lead with Jake Tapper” Wednesday, Landis, now 88, described the assassination and said he retrieved a bullet from the limousine that had carried the Kennedys. Landis said he later placed it in the exam room where the president was being treated at Parkland Memorial Hospital.

He described a chaotic scene and his split-second decisions both to remove the bullet from the limousine and then place it next to the president.

“I thought, well, this is the perfect place to leave the bullet, it’s an important piece of evidence and this was the opportunity to leave it,” Landis said.

Why he waited so long to speak

“Everything was pretty stressful for all the agents,” Landis told Tapper, explaining why he did not tell supervisors about the bullet at the time or in the intervening decades.

“I just stayed in view of Mrs. Kennedy,” Landis said. “I was afraid I was going to pass out and I kept telling myself I’ve got to hang in there.”

He was never interviewed by the Warren Commission and said he was afraid that if he was, he would have broken down “and be an embarrassment to the Secret Service.”

Haunted by his experience, Landis said he left the Secret Service less than a year after the assassination.

There are differing positions on what to make of Landis’ memoir

Jefferson Morley edits a substack newsletter, JFK Facts, that pushes for more transparency in the official record on the Kennedy assassination. He has long doubted the “magic bullet” theory and deconstructed official government reports.

“Landis shows that this is an open question and we really need a much better explanation of what happened on November 22, 1963,” Morley told CNN’s Abby Phillip earlier this week.

Another expert says Landis has not altered the basic conclusions of numerous government reports and exhaustive investigations. Farris Rookstool III is a former FBI analyst who reviewed Kennedy assassination documents.

“The problem with all of this is that it does not change the basic fact that three shots were fired from the southeast corner of the Texas School Book Depository… using Lee Harvey Oswald’s rifle,” Rookstool told Phillip.

It would be impossible to go over all the evidence and foolish to try

If you want to spend days going down rabbit holes of evidence, reports and declassified documents, head on over to the National Archives website. They’ve got the Warren Commission report, which most people now feel was incomplete and rushed.

The National Archives has also posted the work of a congressional investigation that checked the Warren Commission’s work, the House special committee on assassinations, which issued a 1979 report that also found Oswald fired three shots and that two struck Kennedy. The House investigation did not rule out the possibility of another shooter and it also also suggested the evidence pointed to some kind of conspiracy, but not to any suspects. The committee found there was no evidence the Cuban government, the mafia or the CIA were involved.

    There are still secrets

Despite promises by multiple presidents and a law passed by Congress in 1992, the CIA, the Defense Department and the Department of State all continue to have documents they refuse to publicly release.

Although that 1992 law was passed in an effort to build up credibility and cut down on secrecy, reading the 1998 report of a special board set up at the National Archives to push the American national security apparatus to comply with the law is a study in bureaucratic infighting.

The vast majority of documents – millions of them – have been released. But the transparency effort continues. Documents were released just last month, although as with many recently released documents they are still redacted, the typeset is extremely difficult or impossible to read, and their connection to the assassination investigation is not clear.

Biden and Trump both allowed these agencies to keep some documents secret

While both the Biden and Trump administrations released tens of thousands of documents, they allowed others to be kept hidden.

President Joe Biden required agencies to write down a justification for why documents should stay hidden.

It mostly boils down to not wanting to out confidential sources who are still alive, or might be alive, and protecting methods. The CIA says it will wait until people either die or can be presumed dead at the age of 100 before releasing that information.

As a result, it continues to hide thousands of documents, inventoried in a 118-page index.

    ‘Benign coverup’

The CIA’s own historian has described the agency’s selective cooperation and outright hiding of information from the Warren Commission and the House committee as a sort of “benign coverup.” Read that history at the non-governmental transparency website National Security Archive and get some context around it from Kennedy assassination expert Philip Shenon.

Shenon and the historian Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia have been among those poring over the documents released in recent years, some of which suggested doubt even within the CIA about the official assassination story.

Many of the questions revolve around Oswald’s trip to Mexico City weeks before the assassination. Under surveillance by the CIA, he visited the Cuban and Soviet embassies, apparently trying to get a visa to flee the US.

For all of its failings – and there are many – Sabato wrote in 2013 for CNN about how the main points of the Warren Commission report hold.

Most Americans don’t believe the official accounts

A majority, 54%, said in a 2018 CBS News poll there was a coverup. In 2013, 61% said in a CBS poll that others, in addition to Oswald were involved. That’s actually down from 1998, when 76% said they believed others were involved. When CNN asked in 2013 who people believed were involved, a third of the country, 33%, suspected the CIA had something to do with it. But in that 2013 poll, not insubstantial minorities also suspected the mafia and then-Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson could have been involved.

The evidence still points to Oswald

After watching the Landis interview and reading that there are still classified CIA documents, I asked Sabato if he stands by that 2013 argument that the basic thrust of the Warren Commission holds.

“Yes, I still believe Oswald was the lone gunman—despite everything,” Sabato told me in an email.

“By ‘everything’ I mean the inadequacies of the Warren Report, the FBI’s admitted destruction of important evidence, the CIA’s untruths about Oswald as well as the agency’s refusal to release all its JFK assassination documents, and so on.”

He wishes the Warren Commission had interviewed Landis and others back in 1963 rather than simply accepting statements without cross-examination.

“There has been too much magical thinking by theorists since the 1960s,” Sabato said, pointing to the many, frequently outlandish theories you can easily find on the internet.

That said, Sabato said he understands why people don’t believe the commission’s findings. And he made an important point that extends well beyond the Kennedy assassination.

“Our own government and its top agencies gave people plenty of reasons to doubt what they’ve said about Kennedy’s murder,” Sabato said. “In 1963 we bought pretty much anything the authorities told us—that’s how we were raised. Now, though, after decades of government lying about Vietnam, Watergate, Iran-Contra, 9/11, Afghanistan, Iraq, and a thousand other things, can you blame people for not buying what the Warren Commission was selling?”

CORRECTION: This story has been updated to correctly reflect the year President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

    How to Build Credit

Get started as an authorized user, or with a credit-builder loan or secured credit card.

Building credit can be tricky. If you don’t have a credit history, it’s hard to get a loan, a credit card or even an apartment.

But how are you supposed to show a history of responsible repayment if no one will give you credit in the first place?

Several tools can help you establish a credit history:

    • If your aim is to get a credit card, you could start with a secured credit card or co-signed card, or ask to be an authorized user on another person’s card.
    • If you want to build credit without a credit card, you might try a credit-builder loan, secured loan or co-signed loan. There are also ways to use rent, phone and utility payments to build credit. Some of these ways are free, others carry a fee.

Here’s a look at credit-building tools, and how to use them to earn a good credit score.

    1. Get a secured card

    2. Get a credit-builder product or a secured loan

    3. Use a co-signer

    4. Become an authorized user

    5. Get credit for the bills you pay

    6. Practice good credit habits

    7. Check your credit scores and reports

    Get a secured credit card

If you’re building your credit score from scratch, you’ll likely need to start with a secured credit card. A secured card is backed by a cash deposit you make upfront; the deposit amount is usually the same as your credit limit. The minimum and maximum amount you can deposit varies by card. Many cards require a minimum deposit of $200. Some companies such as Avant, Deserve and Petal now offer alternative credit cards that don’t need a security deposit.

You’ll use the card like any other credit card: Buy things, make a payment on or before the due date, incur interest if you don’t pay your balance in full. You’ll receive your deposit back when you close the account.

NerdWallet regularly reviews and ranks the best secured credit card options.

Secured credit cards aren’t meant to be used forever. The purpose of a secured card is to build your credit enough to qualify for an unsecured card — a card without a deposit and with better benefits. Choose a secured card with a low annual fee and make sure it reports payment data to all three credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Your credit score is built using information collected in your credit reports; cards that report to all three bureaus allow you to build a more comprehensive credit history.

Get a credit-builder product or a secured loan

A credit-builder loan is exactly what it sounds like — its sole purpose is to help people build credit.

Typically, the money you borrow is held by the lender in an account and not released to you until the loan is repaid. It’s a forced savings program of sorts, and your payments are reported to credit bureaus. These loans are most often offered by credit unions or community banks; Self offers them online, as does SeedFi.

Kikoff offers a $500 line of credit that is designed strictly to be a credit-building tool.

Another option: If you have money on deposit in a bank or credit union, ask them about a secured loan for credit-building. With these, the collateral is money in your account or certificate of deposit. The interest rate is typically a bit higher than the interest you’re earning on the account, but it may be significantly lower than your other options.

    Use a co-signer

It’s also possible to get a loan or an unsecured credit card using a co-signer. But be sure that you and the co-signer understand that the co-signer is on the hook for the full amount owed if you don’t pay.

    Become an authorized user

A family member or significant other may be willing to add you as an authorized user on his or her card. Doing so adds that card’s payment history to your credit files, so you’ll want a primary user who has a long history of paying on time. In addition, being added as an authorized user can reduce the amount of time it takes to generate a FICO score. It can be especially useful for a young person who is just beginning to build credit.

You don’t have to use — or even possess — the credit card at all in order to benefit from being an authorized user.

Ask the primary cardholder to find out whether the card issuer reports authorized user activity to the credit bureaus. That activity generally is reported, but you’ll want to make sure — otherwise, your credit-building efforts may be wasted.

You should come to an agreement on whether and how you’ll use the card before you’re added as an authorized user, and be prepared to pay your share if that’s the deal you strike.

Get credit for the bills you pay

Rent-reporting services such as Rental Kharma and LevelCredit take a bill you are already paying and put it on your credit report, helping to build a positive history of on-time payments. Not every credit score takes these payments into account, but some do, and that may be enough to get a loan or credit card that firmly establishes your credit history for all lenders.

Experian Boost offers a way to have your cell phone and utility bills reflected in your credit report with that credit bureau. Note that the effect is limited only to your credit report with Experian — and any credit scores calculated on it.

    Practice good credit habits

Building a good credit score takes time and a history of on-time payments.

To have a FICO score, you need at least one account that’s been open six months or longer and at least one creditor reporting your activity to the credit bureaus in the past six months. A VantageScore, from FICO’s biggest competitor, can be generated more quickly.

Practice these good credit habits to build your score:

    • Try to make your payments on time and pay at least the minimum if you can. Paying credit card or loan payments on time, every time, is the most important thing you can do to help build your score. If you are able to pay more than the minimum, that is also helpful for your score.
    • If you use credit cards, keep your credit utilization low — utilization is the percentage of your credit limit you use. We recommend keeping your credit utilization below 30% on all cards when possible. The lower your utilization, the better it is for your score.
    • Avoid applying for multiple credit accounts close together; applications for credit can cause a small, temporary drop in your score. Multiple applications can cause significant damage. NerdWallet recommends spacing applications by about six months if you can, and researching the best credit card for your needs before you apply. Note that multiple applications for auto loans or mortgages within a short span of time will be grouped into one as “rate shopping.”
    • Keep credit card accounts open. Unless you have a compelling reason to close an account, like a high annual fee or poor customer service, consider keeping it open. You can also explore downgrading it or transferring your credit limit to another card. Closing an account can hurt your credit utilization and reduce your average account age.

Check your credit scores and reports

A credit report is a record of how you’ve used credit in the past. Your credit scores predict how you’ll handle credit in the future, using the information in your credit reports. You’ll want to monitor both to watch for errors and to see your credit-building efforts pay off.

NerdWallet offers a free credit score and a credit report from TransUnion. You can also use educational tools such as NerdWallet’s credit score simulator to see how financial actions affect your score.

Several credit card issuers print FICO scores on customers’ monthly statements and allow online access as well. Some card issuers offer free scores to anyone, cardholder or not.

Request your credit reports and check each for errors and discrepancies. You can check your reports for free weekly by using AnnualCreditReport.com. Dispute any credit report errors you find that might be lowering your scores.

When Is the Best Time to Buy a Car?

Summer 2023 update: The ongoing semiconductor chip shortage and subsequent vehicle shortage have caused prices for both new and used cars to hit record highs. And while inventory has improved in recent months, it is nowhere near prepandemic levels.

“We’re going in the right direction, but the degree to which you could call a discount getting closer to normal varies quite a bit from one make to the next,” said Ivan Drury, director of insights for Edmunds. “For consumers, this means a lot more research as there are no longer any universal truths to discounts and car buying.”

Car shoppers today are likely to face price hikes from either dealer-added (often non-negotiable) accessories or “market adjustments.” Discounts are around but vary by brand. As of May 2023, brands offering the greatest discounts were Alfa Romeo, Volvo, Ram, Infiniti, Buick, Audi, GMC and Mercedes-Benz. On the other hand, popular brands such as Kia, Honda, Toyota, Dodge and luxury brands such as Land Rover and Cadillac had average transaction prices above MSRP.

Customers shopping a brand with above MSRP pricing will have little to no negotiating power. There’s also a greater sense of urgency to make a quick decision on a deal because the car may not be there if you take too much time to think about it.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to timing a new car purchase today, Drury says. You can either postpone the purchase as long as possible or buy now and try to maximize the value of your trade-in, as trade-in values remain relatively strong. If you choose to buy now, the best time in the current market is when you find a dealer that has the vehicle in stock and is willing to sell it to you at MSRP or better without any additional options that you may not need.

Drury adds, “We’re still at a point in which automakers want to try to rein in any excess supply. Until the chip crisis is fully resolved, and we see at least one major automaker offer large incentives or dealers offering big discounts, all customers are sort of in a holding pattern to see who will act first.”

Note that the article below was originally written before the chip shortage when vehicle prices were relatively stable and predictable. As things stand now, there may not be a so-called “best time to buy” for the foreseeable future. That said, many major elements of this article still ring true. Outgoing models are more likely to get a discount, highly anticipated new models are less likely to be discounted, and you’re more likely to get good service during the week than on a busy weekend. When the automotive market stabilizes, there’s a good chance that the deals will fall into patterns similar to those described below.

Buyers are always looking for a way to game the system and save money on major purchases. Much of this thinking revolves around zeroing in on the best time to purchase a particular item. Need a new TV? Shop on Black Friday or around the Super Bowl. Need a new winter coat? Shop in January.

It’s no different for cars. Ask anyone, “When is the best time to buy a car?” and you’ll get answers ranging from the end of the month to “wait until the new models come out.” There are as many theories on this topic as there are days in the year. And, oddly enough, there is a grain of truth to many of them.

When are the best times to buy a car?

Simply put, here’s our advice: The best time to buy a car is when you need it and feel ready to buy, regardless of the time of year. Car buying can be stressful, and it can take more than a month to go from deciding what to buy to actually closing the deal. Why add to that pressure by trying to squeeze your shopping into a certain day of the week or a holiday weekend when everyone has the same idea?

But if you’re a shopper who really wants to home in on the very best time to buy, let’s look at your options.

Best time of the year to buy a car

When the month is coming to an end, dealers might be a few cars short of a sales quota that would win them a big bonus. Salespeople will have more motivation to make a deal with a buyer and might deeply discount cars, making up any money lost with the bonus. This is the time when you shouldn’t sleep on the car deal. Keep in mind, however, that if the sales team met its quota earlier that month, salespeople may not be as motivated to give you the screaming deal you might be expecting. This is difficult to know ahead of time. But if you’re in the midst of negotiating and the dealer offers you a super-low price, take a moment to ask your salesperson why the dealer is willing to potentially lose money on this sale. If the reason makes sense to you, and the price is considerably better than your research says it should be, it could be a sign the dealer is trying to make a sales goal.

If you’re feeling nervous about buying in a short end-of-month timeframe, test-drive the car in which you’re interested earlier in the month and close the deal as the end of the month approaches. Also, many new-car incentive offers are good for a few days after the month ends, which gives you a bit of a buffer.

If your primary objective is to buy or lease a new car at the best price possible, Edmunds data indicates that December’s year-end sales events will give you a “perfect storm” of savings.

You should look for a vehicle from the outgoing model year that has generous incentives. According to Edmunds data, December has the year’s highest discount off MSRP — 6.1% on average — and the highest incentives. Automakers and dealerships want to close the year with strong sales. They also want to get rid of the prior model-year cars that are taking up space, so they’re motivated.

Each manufacturer handles the end-of-the-year selldown differently. So some car dealerships will have a better selection of outgoing-year vehicles late in the year, while the pickings could be slim at others. Be sure to check Edmunds’ Incentives and Rebates for customer cash rebates, low-interest incentives and lease specials.

While the data shows that December is the best time of the year to buy, there are also a few other viable months. In other words, if you need a car in January, there’s no need to wait 11 months to get a good deal.

The discounts on new cars typically follow a trend that coincides with the introduction of new models. In general, the more new cars there are coexisting with old models, the better the savings.

    Least discounted months

    • January
    • February
    • March
    • April

    Better discounted months

    • May
    • June
    • July
    • August
    • September

    Most discounted months

    • October
    • November
    • December

The months of January through April are generally slow-selling ones and have the smallest discounts off MSRP. In fact, the month with the smallest amount off MSRP is February, with an average discount of about 5.7%. Things get better in the summer months: The introduction of new cars drives down prices on outgoing models. And finally, the discounts improve the most the closer you get to the end of the year.

If you need a car in October and want to get the best deal, you might want to wait until December, even though you’ll run the risk of having fewer cars to choose from. Waiting will give you more time to do more research on the right car for you. You’ll also be able to gather more price quotes.

Early in the week: This tip is more about the level of attention you can expect from a salesperson than about getting a killer deal. Weekends are typically the busiest time at a dealership. The salesperson might be juggling multiple customers, and the finance office is likely to be a bottleneck. But if you show up on a Monday or Tuesday, there will be less foot traffic. You can ask plenty of questions and the transaction should take far less time. In some parts of the country, however, dealerships are closed on Sundays. And as a result, Monday is a pretty busy day of the week. If that’s the case for you, go on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

Best times to buy a car

All the new model-year cars used to debut in the fall, making the end of summer a good time to shop for leftovers. These days, however, there is no unified new model-year season. For example, we see cars from the upcoming model year debuting as early as January of a calendar year. Even so, Edmunds data indicates that the end of the summer is a sweet spot for outgoing model-year vehicles.

Edmunds analysts say that August and September are when they generally see automakers make the most decided transition into the new models. The summer months tend to correspond with a bump in incentives, particularly low APR financing on outgoing model-year vehicles.

Something to note: It’s worth looking at the incoming model-year cars to see what features have changed and to get a feel for pricing. It’s rare, but there have been instances when a car from the incoming model year has had better incentives than a car from the outgoing model year, particularly if you’re looking to lease.

When the manufacturer is going to continue making a certain car model but is about to redesign it completely, you can see some serious savings on the outgoing design. True, you are buying a car without the latest styling or technology, but if you’re more bargain hunter than trendsetter, this might not matter to you.

Sometimes the manufacturer announces that it will stop making a car altogether. There’s potential in this situation for even bigger savings. You should know that the car will depreciate steeply if it’s being discontinued, but if you plan on keeping it for a while, it won’t affect you. It’s also worth looking into why the automaker pulled the plug on a given vehicle. Is it a matter of changing tastes, or was the car truly bad in terms of performance or reliability? In recent years, for example, SUVs have surged in popularity and many domestic automakers have discontinued many of their sedans. Going further back, vehicles such as the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet never really found an audience and the Pontiac Aztek had a face only Walter White could love.

Best holidays to buy a car

It’s hard to miss the inflatable eagles, gorillas and wacky waving tube men that dot car lots, to say nothing of ads that promise “rock-bottom” prices. Does a “Star-Spangled Sale-a-Bration” mean savings for you? It can, but be prepared for a busier-than-normal showroom. Ideally, you want to do your research and test-drive before the holiday and close the deal on the weekend. Or, better yet, sew up the deal on the first weekday after the weekend. Here’s a deeper dive into shopping on a holiday weekend. And the following is a list of the three-day holiday weekends, along with a brief rating of each:

    • Presidents Day: February is the month with the smallest discounts off MSRP, so this is unlikely to be the best month to buy.
    • Memorial Day: This holiday kicks off the summer buying season and is a solid time to get a deal. It’s also when you will have the largest selection of outgoing models to choose from. Shop around this time if you’re particular about a certain color or option package.
    • Fourth of July: There should be a greater mix of incoming and current-year vehicles around the Fourth. It’s worth taking a look at what’s on the lot if you’re unsure whether you want the car from the outgoing or the incoming year.
    • Labor Day: This holiday is the sweet spot in terms of selection and competitive pricing. It’s not the very best of the year in terms of savings, but you’ll have more vehicles to choose from than if you waited for the year-end deals.

It’s the biggest retail shopping day in the U.S. And people have been known to camp out for hours for deals on big-screen TVs and other electronics. The same shopping fervor happens on car lots after Thanksgiving. In recent years, automakers and dealers have been offering more incentives, discounts and “doorbusters” as a means of capturing some of that retail excitement. Black Friday also signals the end of the model year, so you’ll see greater discounts on outgoing models.

If you want to shop on Black Friday, you’ll need to do some pre-Thanksgiving planning, such as obtaining a value on your trade-in, getting preapproved for an auto loan from your bank or credit union, and taking some test drives. Also, make sure you read the fine print on any Black Friday deal ads that seem too good to be true. If you’re willing to brave the crowds, here are more tips for car shopping on Black Friday.

These days, new vehicles are launched throughout the year, though we tend to see clusters of new models in the spring and fall.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency actually has rules on how a vehicle is assigned a given model year: “For engines/equipment subject to emission standards based on model years, the first day of the annual production period can be no earlier than January 2 of the calendar year preceding the year for which the model year is named, or the earliest date of manufacture for any engine/equipment in the engine family, whichever is later. The last day of the annual production period can be no later than December 31 of the calendar year for which the model year is named or the latest date of manufacture for any engine/equipment in the engine family, whichever is sooner.”

In other words, a 2024 model year vehicle can be released anytime on or after January 2, 2023. Similarly, a new model can be labeled as a 2024 all the way until December 31, 2024.

Best time to buy a used car

October through December is a good time to buy a used car. These months coincide with the peak new-car buying season at the dealership, which means more trade-ins are entering the used car inventory. More trade-ins translate to a better selection of used cars — and better prices, especially if the dealership is trying to hit its end-of-year quota. And if you’re truly looking to get the best price on a used car, you’ll want to shop in December.

That said, Edmunds analysts are predicting that used vehicle prices are likely to stay elevated through 2023 and perhaps into the new year unless new vehicle sales take a turn.

“If new car sales stall out, automakers and dealers could leverage heavier incentives to entice consumers into new purchases, which would in turn place downward pressure on used car values,” said Drury. “But since most automakers have been deliberate in aligning vehicle production and demand to avoid the inventory glut issues they faced prior to the pandemic, consumers probably shouldn’t count on any major bargains or discounts through the rest of the year.”

As we’ve noted, you’ll find many opportunities throughout the year to get a great deal on a new car. Ultimately, the best time to get a new car is when you need one and only after you have completed your research.

Figure out the market value of the car using Edmunds tools, and factor in any incentives and rebates. Take a look at our new car pricing or used cars for sale where we rate a number of the vehicle prices to assist with negotiation and provide perspective on whether you have a fair offer. Watch for unexpected add-ons. Then make your deal. In the long run, this approach makes more sense than trying to predict the effects of weather, holidays, and the seasonality of your car purchase.

They postponed several dates of their European tour, including stops in Glasgow, Belfast and Dublin, in order for Barker to return home. By the following Friday, the band’s tour had resumed in Antwerp, Belgium.

“God is great. I flew home for a life-threatening emergency surgery for our baby that I’m so grateful went well,” Barker wrote in an update shared on X (formerly known as Twitter). “I want to say thank you for all the support. Tour resumes Friday.”

“As someone who has had three really easy pregnancies in the past, I wasn’t prepared for the fear of rushing into urgent fetal surgery,” Kardashian continued. “I don’t think anyone who hasn’t been through a similar situation can begin to understand that feeling of fear. I have a whole new understanding and respect for the mamas who have had to fight for their babies while pregnant.”

She ended the post, “Praise be to God. Walking out of the hospital with my baby boy in my tummy and safe was the truest blessing. 🙏🏼🤍.”

A source told PEOPLE that Kardashian “was very scared after finding out that her baby needed surgery,” but “she is doing okay now.”

Spaghetti is probably the most kid-friendly pasta recipe to ever exist! Serve this spaghetti with a side of Breadsticks and a fresh Salad – your whole family will be thanking you!

It seems like everyone I have ever met has “a spaghetti recipe” they know and love, and each one is different! Some have store-bought sauce, some homemade. Some have meat, some have veggies, and others don’t.

It just surprises me that they are all different, but I love that everyone has their own twist on this classic dinner recipe.

We too have a favorite spaghetti recipe we’ve made for years and love. That’s probably why we make this spaghetti for dinner so often (we also have a great Baked Spaghetti and Chicken Spaghetti)!

It’s simple, easy to make, and always tastes delicious, and everyone likes it. And honestly, leftovers taste exactly the same heated up as if it was just made (my kind of leftover)!! I usually serve it with some Cheesy Garlic Bread for one delicious meal!

Our spaghetti recipe has a delicious sauce with just a hint of sweetness. The sauce takes some time since you simmer it for almost an hour, but I promise it’s worth it.

GROUND BEEF. Brown the hamburger in a large pan. Drain the fat if desired.

SAUCE. Throw in salt, pepper, tomato sauce and paste, water (with the bouillon cubes in it or beef broth in the can), sugar, basil, oregano, and garlic. Simmer on low for an hour.

PASTA. A few minutes before the hour is up, cook the box of spaghetti noodles as directed on the package. Once the noodles are cooked, add them to the sauce and serve immediately.

We like to top our spaghetti with grated (or even shredded) Parmesan cheese and some fresh basil if desired. It truly is so delicious!

Meatless option. If you would like a meatless version, cook the sauce without the hamburger, and just put a tablespoon of olive oil in the pan before adding any other ingredients. You can make Meatballs on the side if some people want the option to add meat!

I like to double this easy spaghetti recipe and cook it in a slow cooker. I store half of the sauce in the freezer for later! To make in a crock pot:

BEEF. Brown the ground beef and add to a crock pot.

SAUCE. Add all of the other sauce ingredients. Cook on LOW for 6-8 hours or on HIGH for 3-4 hours.

This is our best spaghetti recipe, but you can easily change it up to make it your own tasty version.

Pasta alternatives. Try using zucchini noodles, rice noodles, or Spaghetti Squash in lieu of traditional spaghetti noodles.

Acidity level. If you find the sauce to be more acidic than you’d like, try adding one of these for every 12 ounces of sauce:

    • ½ -1 teaspoon white or brown sugar
    • ½ of a shredded carrot
    • sautéed onions and mushrooms
    • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
    • ⅛ cup Parmesan or Romano cheese

Ground beef. I like to use 80/20 ground beef because it is so flavorful. Since it produces so much excess oil, I will drain it before adding the meat to the sauce. If you use lower-fat ground beef mixture you can choose to add in the excess oil or drain it.

Use ground turkey, ground chicken, or ground Italian sausage in place of ground beef. For added flavor, mince 1-2 garlic cloves and add them to the ground beef. Brown in a large skillet.

Spice it up. Stir some red pepper flakes into the pasta sauce for some heat.

Fresh herbs. Use fresh herbs for great flavor. One teaspoon of dried herbs equals one tablespoon of fresh herbs. Dried herbs are added at the beginning of the cooking time, while fresh. herbs are added toward the end.

Pasta. In general, a serving size of pasta is 2 ounces of dry pasta per person. Drain pasta water.

Using fresh tomatoes really adds great flavor. Making your own sauce adds about an hour to the cooking time but it is worth it!

    1. Peel tomatoes. I recommend ¾-1 pound of tomatoes to make 8 ounces of sauce. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Cut a small X on the bottom of each tomato and place them in the boiling water for 45-60 seconds. Transfer them to a bowl of ICE water. Peel the skin off.
    2. Pulse the tomatoes in a food processor to your desired texture, then pour them into a saucepan. Simmer for 30-60 minutes. A thinner sauce will only need 30-40 minutes, a thicker sauce will need 50-60 minutes.

STORE. Leftover homemade spaghetti can last in the fridge for 3-5 days if properly stored in an airtight container. To reheat quickly, microwave in 30-second increments, stirring in between, until hot.

If you have more time, reheat in the oven. Place into a baking dish, and cover with foil. Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake until hot. The actual baking time will depend on how much is being reheated.

FREEZE spaghetti in a couple of ways:

    1. Freeze only the sauce. Cook sauce according to recipe directions, let cool, put into an airtight freezer-safe container, and freeze for up to 6 months.
      • To use: thaw in the fridge, place sauce into a saucepan on the stovetop, and heat. Cook pasta according to directions.
    2. Freeze both sauce and pasta. Make the sauce according to the recipe directions and cook the noodles al dente. Combine the two, cool, and place into an airtight freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 2 months.
      • To use: thaw in the fridge. Place into a baking dish, cover with foil, and put in the oven preheated to 350°F. Bake for about 30 minutes or until hot.

Dr. Ian Smith: The Power of Carb Cheat Days to Restore Metabolic Flexibility — And Power Off Over-50 Fat Fast

Kris Ronchetti, 74, is sure glad she tried it — she reversed pre-diabetes and healed her thyroid!

By Lisa Maxbauer August 1, 2023

There’s a reason we eat the same breakfast, shop the same route at the grocery store or order the same entrée at our favorite restaurants. We’re creatures of habit. And that goes for our diets, too. We know what healthy foods we like to eat so we stick with them, repeatedly enjoying a protein smoothie for breakfast, salad for lunch or grilled chicken for dinner. Despite our virtuous choices and ingrained habits, though, we watch as our midsections expand. It’s frustrating, but there’s a reason for it: When our diet lacks delightful surprises, our results do too. That’s why diet experts now recommend a strategy called metabolic confusion, which involves alternating between low and high calorie days — and including more carbs on the latter.

    What is metabolic inflexibility?

When we’re young, our bodies are flexible in more ways than one. Not only can we bend and stretch with ease, but our bodies shift seamlessly from burning carbs and blood sugar during the day to burning stored fat at night. It keeps us energized and lean. The wrench in this very healthy system? In the modern world, we often eat so much food that turns to blood sugar, our bodies burn sugar all day and all night. We rarely burn any stored fat at all.

“We lose the ability to shift back and forth between efficiently burning fat or carbs,” explains Harvard-trained nutrition expert Ian K. Smith, MD, author of The Met-Flex Diet. “It’s extremely common for people, especially as we get older, to become metabolically inflexible.” Basically, our bodies get so out of practice at burning fat, they no longer do it properly.

How metabolic confusion turns back the clock

Thankfully, leading nutrition experts say it’s easy to restore our rigid metabolism to its youthful state with metabolic confusion. Instead of eating the same foods or calories every day, you alternate your choices to get the best weight-loss results.

“When the body is stuck at a plateau, you have to challenge it, physically and metabolically. You have to confuse it to lose it,” says Mike Moreno, MD, who advises shifting macronutrient ratios throughout the week. The popular new diet platform Noom also uses metabolic confusion in its plans.

“There’s a saying that goes, ‘when you do the same thing over and over again and expect to get different results, that is the definition of insanity.’ The same is true with our diet. This is where metabolic confusion can really help,” explains Anna Cabeca, DO, an osteopathic physician specializing in women’s health and weight loss. She instructs dieters to cycle between different eating patterns in her book MenuPause. This “confusion” concept is already well known in the fitness world, when people focus on either “leg days” or “arm days,” says Dr. Cabeca. People vary their exercises so they’re not doing the same thing every day.

Metabolic confusion leads to fast fat loss

Dr. Ian is using the concept of metabolic confusion to help frustrated dieters. “The element of surprise that is so critical on the battlefield is also critical in the weight-loss battle,” he says. So he formulated a plan combining “cyclical keto” with intermittent fasting — two strategies proven to wake up a stalled metabolism, outlined in his book The Met Flex Diet. The three-time Ivy-League-educated doctor promises, “I have carefully combined strategies to yield maximal results.”

Utilizing the power of metabolic confusion can help you control your weight like a kid again. Dr. Ian explains, “A lot of people are eating some of the right things already. They’re just not eating them in the right pattern, at the right time. This is a more strategic approach.” His two-part metabolic confusion plan, which he created exclusively for FIRST, combines keto cycling plus fasting. It’s a surefire way to “lose a lot of weight, very quickly,” while eliminating diet boredom, says Dr. Ian.

Step 1 to restore metabolic flexibility: Try carb cycling

Each week of this metabolic-confusion diet starts with two high-carb days, followed by five low-carb or keto days. “It’s not like straight keto that says if you don’t stay in ketosis, you’re going to mess up. Here, you’re cycling in and out of keto,” explains Dr. Ian. You prime the body to get energy from carbs, then fat, and repeat the pattern. By quickly alternating between different food sources, the body becomes reacquainted with processing previously deprived food groups. Dr. Ian says, “The simple idea of switches acts as a rocket booster for metabolism.”

Frequent fuel switching is a powerful tactic for breaking through plateaus. And the delicious carb breaks — hello pizza and spaghetti! — prevent fat-packing stress-hormone flares than can occur under long-term carb restrictions. Dr. Ian adds, “People enjoy this program because of the diversity of the food. It really does not deprive you. You’re eating stuff you already like.”

    Step 2: Add Intermittent fasting

Refraining form eating for roughly 16 hours in each 24-hour cycle — for example, from 7 PM to 11 AM — is the other key to this metabolic-confusion diet. Dr. Ian says this type of fasting or “time-restricted feeding” allows for all your meals and snacks to be focused within an 8-hour window of time, providing ample time for your system to rest and digest — and allow pounds to drop off!

In an Italian study, participants who followed this routine of fasting and feeding lost 423% more fat than those on a traditional eating schedule.

While fasting may sound daunting, millions of women have found it freeing. Charelle Smith-Davis dropped 180 pounds (40 pounds in 40 days) by skipping breakfast. She says, “I saved at least $100 a week on food from the store and restaurants.”

The world’s authority on intermittent fasting, Jason Fung, MD, concurs the practice can be a welcome change in busy life. “Unlike other interventions like exercise that require work, you get the benefits of fasting by simply not doing something.”

Why intermittent fasting is especially good for diabetics

Another reason to consider fasting? It can reduce the need for medication. Some 90% of study participants with Type 2 diabetes who followed intermittent fasting reduced their need for insulin and other blood-sugar lowering medications, according to research in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Even better: 55% of participants achieved total diabetes remission and no longer needed medication.

“Insulin responds exceptionally well to intermittent fasting,” says nurse practitioner Cynthia Thurlow, author of Intermittent Fasting Transformation. “Food is the impetus for insulin secretion. But when you fast, your body naturally needs lower levels.” That’s good news for the wallet too. Researcher on the study Dongbo Liu, PhD, says, “Diabetes medications are costly…Our study saw medication costs decrease by 77% for people after fasting.”

What to eat on a metabolic-confusion diet

    What you’d eat on a high-protein day vs a high-carb day

On Dr. Ian’s three week plan, you’ll practice “cycling keto” — two days of high-carb eating followed by five days of low-carb eating. This pattern wakes up a stuck-in-a-rut metabolism and restarts slimming as you move in and out of keto. Dr. Ian says, “Your body needs to be continuously surprised.”

    On high-carb days

You’ll devote 60 to 70% of your calories to carbohydrates, 15 to 20% to protein and 5 to 10% to fat, says Dr. Ian. During this time your body will be getting energy from the starches you eat. Consider oatmeal or fruit for a late breakfast, cheese pizza for lunch and spaghetti and meatballs for dinner.

    On low-carb days

You’ll get as much as 70 to 90% of your daily calorie intake from healthy fatty foods. (For best results, choose monounsaturated and polyunsaturated sources like avocados, eggs, olive oil, fish, flaxseed, full-fat dairy, nuts, seeds and olives). Make protein 10 to 20% of your calories, reducing processed meat, and the remaining percentage healthy carbs like fruit, veggies and quinoa. During this time, in the absence of carbs, Dr. Ian says, your body will be compelled to “move to plan B: burning fat.” Try an egg burrito for a late breakfast, Cobb salad for lunch and lamb chops for dinner.

Fit three meals and two snacks into each day, delaying breakfast and consuming everything within an 8-hour window of time. Choose whatever window works with your busy schedule. And avoid soda and added sugar on the plan.

    Don’t forget snacks

Dr. Ian says frequent snacking promotes metabolic flexibility. He advises keeping snacks under 150 calories each and avoiding snacks within 1 hour of a meal. (Alternatively, you can eat both of your day’s snacks consecutively without a meal in between.) On high-carb days, consider snacks such as 2 scoops of sorbet, an English muffin with cucumber slices and cream cheese, ½ cup of granola or ½ banana dipped in chocolate. On low-carb days, try snacks such as 1 hardboiled egg, ½ avocado stuffed with 3 oz. tuna, or bacon-wrapped asparagus.

How increased metabolic flexibility worked wonders for Kris

Draped in her hospital gown, Kris Ronchetti felt more vulnerable and uncomfortable than ever. She’d just heard a speech from her doctor about the importance of getting her health in order, and Kris worried, I just don’t feel like I will ever be able to lose this weight.

Kris finally felt a ray of hope when she learned about low-carb eating. For the first time in her life, she gained control of her appetite by eating satisfying foods like avocado and coconut oil. It wasn’t about restrictions or punishment. She also practiced carb cheat days where she could enjoy a dinner or dessert with friends. She recalls, “I didn’t get sick of it because the food was so good and I didn’t binge because I was always full.”

Within the first 2 or 3 months Kris was already down 25 pounds. She felt so nourished on this flexible keto-on-keto-off plan, she didn’t need to rush her breakfast. Instead she started with coffee (click through to learn more about protein coffee to lose weight) and waited until 10 A.M. to eat her first solid meal. It was perfect since she wasn’t a morning person. She also closed her kitchen around 6 P.M. each night. As the weight kept coming off, Kris noted, “It was a sign from the universe that I was on the right path.”

In all, Kris lost more than 100 pounds, got off her blood pressure meds, reversed her pre-diabetes, improved her thyroid function and elevated her post-menopausal moods. “It’s my passion to help women over 50 do this,” she says. “It’s not impossible to start over — no matter your age. Now I’m looking forward to my 80s!
